Jim Crehan

We regret to report that Jim Crehan passed away on Monday morning 1st June, losing his battle against terminal cancer.  As soon as information about the funeral is known club members will be circulated.

Jim was an integral part of the club during his time as an athlete and the courage he has shown in the face of his illness has been immense. Our thoughts are with Sue, Matt and the rest of Jim’s family.

 Dash Quadrathlon

On Sunday 17 junior athletes made the short trip to Sportcity in Manchester to compete in the Quadrathlon competition arranged by Dash Athletics. This competition continues to grow and attracts dozens of the best young multi event athletes in the country making it a really tough competition to earn Top 10 finishes.

Sophie Lilley, Lucy Strettle and Jack Smedley all made their debut for the club and should be proud of their performances and finishing positions.

The fine weather also helped our more experienced athletes to smash long standing PB's with one or two breaking records in every event that they entered.

Long Jump Improvements

The Club continues to strive for improved maintenance of facilities and recently recruited members to dig out the Long Jump pit after various lumps of concrete and a paving flag surfaced in the sand. Huge thanks to Causer Family (Chris, Ray, Michael, Jonathon), Helena McGoldrick, Roberts Family (Ian, Charlie, Jacob), Colin Spark, Rawlinson Family (Paul, Nathan, Josh), Ford Family (Jonny, Jo, Jamie, Theo), Tony Whalley and Simon Neal who all brought their buckets and spades on Friday 7th June. The gang worked hard and after about 1 ½ hours the sand was removed exposing damaged paving flags and crumbling concrete to the base and sides of the pit. The area needs to be inspected and an estimate obtained for the required repairs, however, this will be done in conjunction with the Sport Centre and Council. We hope to have a much improved Long Jump back in action as soon as possible, after all, we have one of the best long jumpers – Michael Causer (currently ranked 3rd in U20’s) and a superb long and triple jumper – Taylor Caton-Hand (ranked 4th LJ in U17’s and 12th TJ in U17’s) to look after and provide suitable facilities for.

Apologies to anyone who may have been missed from the roll call and thanks again to all who helped.

Dave Forrester was second in the 800m while Callum Lockett won a fiercely contested 800m in a personal best time. Henderson's End fell race, Rivington Pike : Thursday 6th June
Thursday evening saw four of the Vets take on the Henderson's End fell race up and around Rivington Pike.
The race was a scenic, but challenging 7 miler, with over 800 feet of ascent. Fell veteran Mark Liptrot led the team with Sonya Monaghan running her second fell race,
Jonny Ford running his first and Gary Oldham getting a baptism of fire having only just decided to join the club the day before!
Beautiful weather and great, friendly race organisation all came together to make for a brilliant run.
Thanks also to Greg Carns for marshalling and being club photographer for the night.
