Fitness Requirements Trail events are great fun but they are a challenge, that’s what makes their completion such an achievement. The variety of terrain and altitude mean that a reasonable level of fitness is required. If you are participating in the Dream Trail Race you need to consider what level of fitness you currently have and then create a training programme that gradually gets you to where you need to be. If you aren’t already a runner then we strongly advise you to check with your doctor before launching into a training schedule. As a guide, we would recommend that you should be able to run a mile in under 15 minutes to be able to complete and enjoy the event. Daunting as this may seem today, you have plenty of time to get there so don’t be afraid to enter and look forward to getting fitter over the next few months. You’ll need to combine training sessions in the gym or street with a few hills sessions to acclimatise your body. To start off with, just try walking some of the hills around Dream or in your local area and see how fit you are. Gradually build this to a jog and eventually a run. You only need to do this once a week to soon notice an improvement. Your legs may get stiff at first but after a few weeks you will sail up and down without too many problems. Many people find that training with others is easier. New members are always welcome at St Helens Sutton Athletic Club and we have training groups to suit all ages and abilities. Why not come down on a Tuesday or Thursday at 6.15pm to Sutton Leisure Centre and get some advice from one of our qualified and friendly coaches?
Throughout the summer we will
run regular training sessions at The Dream to help you to get fitter and also
have a sneak peak at where we’ll be going on race day. Please visit the latest
news page and follow us on Facebook for up to date information.
Hopefully we will answer many of your questions below but if not please Contact us.
Trail Running is not recommended for non-runners as it does involve varying terrain and some hills. However, there is plenty of time before the run for you to achieve the required level of fitness if you knuckle down and start getting fit now. As a guide, you should probably be able to complete a mile on the streets in under 15 minutes to be capable of finishing the course.
No, regular athletes and those preparing for the Cross Country season are more than welcome. They will be allowed to set off at the front of the pack so that they can pit themselves against other club runners.
Trail running shoes are recommended as the additional grip will help you, particularly when running downhill. We strongly advise against running in fashion footwear such as Converse Pumps or Court Trainers .Running spikes are not required as some of the Trail will be on tarmac and could therefore damage them (and potentially you also).
No. The St Helens Windows Dream Trail Race won’t have any bogs, obstacles or pipes to go through. We will be running over fields and crossings a couple of ditches so if the weather has been poor then it may be muddy but not intentionally so.
No, but it would be great if you do support The Steve Prescott Foundation.
You will be emailed closer to the race date but we do plan to have a registration area, changing facilities, toilets and refreshments on site. Parking is a little limited so where possible we encourage people to car share and use public transport but there are plenty of roads in the area that are not restricted parking.
The children's race is a taster to get youngsters involved in the fun. If your child is nervous or needs some encouragement then you are more than welcome to accompany your child round the course.
