West Cheshire 5k August
The club fielded a team at the West Cheshire 5k. Louise Casey 20.27 (110), Elaine McNamara 23.46 (181), Julia Eccleston 24.11 (189) and Dorothy Fairhurst 30.35 (224) completed the course.
Their positions in the team race will be provided as soon as they are known. Dorothy injured her hamstring when she tried to retrieve a key from her shoelace and has decided to use her pockets in future.

Bank Holiday Open Meeting at Hyndburn 26th August
All the Way Vicky Johnson led the way at Hyndburn with a new club under 13 discus record, throwing 21.02metres for a track record. Vicky, who was second in the long jump and third in the shot putt, is looking forward to a constructive winter's work with Dave Morley and the throws coaches as she aims for next year's Merseyside Championships.
Mike Ehlen was in greater form winning the 100 and 200 metres and later joining in a mixed relay with Vicky, long jumper winner Louise Hayes and Layla Tapley, who had already won the 1500 metres, to finish third.
Mike Atkinson and Barry Clark won their mixed relay as did the under 11 quartet of Laura Carroll, Katie Jolly, Zoe Woodward and Zoe Woods.
Many thanks to those parents who travelled. Their enthusiasm has helped spark a new spirit amongst the younger age group which will be built on during the Sports Hall, Cross Country and 2003 track and field seasons.

Cheshire League at Connahs Quay. 11th August
Relaxation! Cars packed to overflowing took club members to Connahs Quay for the Cheshire League third round match on a day, which was alternately hot, cold, wet and dry. The lads finished fourth with winning performances from Jon Calder, Barry Cunliffe, Mike Atkinson and solid support work from Mike Ehlen, Ben Clough and Ryan Tapley.
The girls were second and although not all the results are known yet, the under 17’s won their relay, the Wade sisters made debuts as relay runners while Melissa McLoughlin made her first track appearance in the 1500 metres.

The Race is on!!!

Many thanks to our officials John Irwin (Field), Phil Thomas (Track Referee), Dave Morley (Chief Judge), Bernie McLoughlin (Umpire) and to those parents who filled their vehicles to the maximum to ensure everyone who wanted to travel did so.
The final two matches in this series are in September at Colwyn Bay and Bury respectively (see fixture list).

No Stopping Gill, 8th August
Gill Bacon added yet another club record to her name when she recorded
4.55.55 at Stretford on Tuesday 7 August only two days after setting a new
3000 metres mark of 10.37.8. On Wednesday Gill travelled to Chorley where
she was the third lady in the 4 mile road race. In addition, David Twigg
recorded 4.21.96 and Jodi Nelson 5.11.15 to set personal bests at the
Grand Prix meeting. This weekend the club competes in the Cheshire League
at Connahs Quay with transport leaving Sutton Sports Centre no later than
11 a.m. Dave Morley will be bringing the numbers.

Northern Women’s League – Division 4 (West) Bebington 4th August 2002
The ladies’ team made it a memorable weekend for the club, storming to victory at The Oval to lift the division 4 (west) title. Michelle Murray and Sue Lowrie won the sprints and high jump competitions, sprinters, Natasha Brier, Nicola Quinn and th Lewis sisters maintained the pressure while Janet Holmes and Julia Hayes provided our best hammer result.
The under 17’s provided a string of wins. Jodie Nelson (300m, 800m and javelin), Layla Tapley (800m), Lucy Mitchell (shot and 300 metres) and Emma McCletchey who interrupted her holiday in Wales to win the ‘B’ javelin.
Laura Brier raised her javelin best to almost 20 metres while Jessica Cretu and Laura Savage successfully debuted in the under 15 hurdles. Jessica had already competed in the 800 metres where she was joined by Rebecca Clague who had been at a wedding until the early hours.
High jumpers Katy Wade and Stephanie Currie competed well in poor conditions while Anna Sheffield and Vicky Johnson added 14 precious points in the discus.
Diane Appleton found willing partners in Catherine Lambert (400m) and Chris Dempsey (800m) to keep piling on the points. Gill Bacon broke the club 3000 metres record again in a race in which Cecilia Fitzsimons demonstrated her characteristic determination by holding off East Cheshire at the finish.
Then it happened. It rained. Actually it poured. Proceedings were halted. The league rules are clear. If 25 events have not been completed the result is declared null and void. Thankfully, the team managers all agreed to score the three events in progress when the match was stopped. The result stood and we were champions.
Thanks to those who scored the points and to Becky Wade and Louise Casey who turned up ready to run but were prevented by the weather. Thanks to the field officials, John Irwin, Paul (Michelle’s boyfriend), George Mullineux and Robbie McKenna (South Liverpool), Pam Appleton (timekeeper) and track judge Phil Thomas.
Thanks to those parents who provided transport or travelled, especially Mrs Sheffield who rescued the numbers Dave Morley forgot. Ray Vose, Marc Laithwaite and Dorothy Fairhurst who came to lend support and to Dave Morley whose work with the youngsters has been so vital in our success.

Northern Men’s League at Wavertree 3rd August 2002

The men’s team clinched promotion with a solid team effort, finishing third behind Barrow & Preston but, significantly, defeating Northern (Isle of Man) to win the division four (west) title. Victories came late in the day, Barry Graney winning the B string 5000 metres, Phil Robinson the triple jump and the two relay squads led off by Wayne Joyce taking the opposition apart. Robinson and Ray Vose led by example, Richard Farrar made an invaluable contribution and Marc Laithwaite summed up the spirit of the team to earn a couple of points in the 200 metres immediately before taking second place in the ’A’ 5000 metres. The rest of the lads, Alan Geraghty, Barry Cunliffe, David Vose and newcomer Barry Kilby played their part. Thanks too to Dave Morley (track judge), Joyce Vose (field), Frank Vose (timekeeper), Phil Thomas (floating official) and Helen Finch (volunteer) for their contributions.
