Search our site:

Forgotten how bad you used to be ?  Use the new search box on the Home Page to search the Sutton Web Pages.  It's easy to use, for example typing Barry Graney Results will list the all the results for that athlete, Barry Graney Beacon would restrict the search to that race.  Try it and see what you can find.

The Great North Run Rip Off and Other Mass Road Races:

It was Denis Wharton who mentioned it first but it's become the talk of the BBC Athletics website since. In order to guarantee you will be accepted to run in the Great North Run in the next three years you have to pay £30 upfront and then the entry fee of £34 for the race each year. However, if you didn't run in the 2004 race you still won't be guaranteed an entry. Some people, including many in the North East, have said they will boycott the race for life. The surprising thing is that anyone is surprised.

For all their claims of raising money for charity the big city races are about raising money for their organisers who ride roughshod over the needs of grass roots athletics. The London Marathon Company, which stages the equally as expensive London Marathon, are proposing to organise a half marathon in Liverpool on the same day as our own road race. They haven't applied for a permit and if one was denied, as it should be, they would organise the race without one. Whereas we send in our unattached levy fees, some of these big races with-hold significant amounts.

According to some runners they're happy to pay massive entry fees in order to experience the atmosphere. They shouldn't be surprised if the clubs decide to introduce some atmosphere of their own by raising race entry fees themselves. That way what the clubs do for the sport might receive the appreciation it deserves. Just a thought!! Supportive, critical or alternative opinions welcome for discussion.

Championship Entries:

To date 42 entries have been received for the Merseyside and Cheshire Cross Country Championships while over a dozen have paid their entry fees for the Northern and National Championships which are scheduled for Consett and Birmingham respectively. No final decision has been taken as to whether we are travelling to Consett on the day or staying over. All entrants will receive details of the cost of coach travel and should reply as soon as possible as to their preference for overnight or on the day travel. Phil Thomas is coordinating entries and ancillary options (accommodation or overnight travel) so an early answer would be appreciated in view of all the planning required.

Minimum Age Regulation:

With immediate effect the club will no longer accept children under the age of eight for training. We are unable to obtain insurance for children under this age and cannot accept parental indemnity for their own children. In order to protect the interests of the children, the club, its committee and coaches the rule will apply to everyone without exception. While this means that children under this age who have been attending will be disappointed that they cannot attend until their eighth birthday, it would be unreasonable to expect to expect the club, its committee or coaches to accept the potential liability for any claims made in the event of an accident.
