Members of St Helens Sutton A.C. took part in most age groups of the National Cross-country Championships held in muddy conditions in Nottingham’s Wollaton Park. The club’s youngest runner was Michael Dobson who ran in the Under13years. Boys race over 3km. finishing in 315th position in a field of 458 finishers with a time of 15 min.03 secs.. Michael Brussels ran in U15yrs. Boys 4.5km. race recording 18 min.45 secs. finishing 313th of 379 finishers.

Running in the U17yrs. Ladies race was Rachel McGoldrick over 5km. to finish in 93rd place with 163 finishers behind her and a time 28 min.06 secs.. Lucy Thompson was a competitor in the U20yrs. Ladies 6km. race recording a time of 28 min.03 secs. and a place of 92nd amongst the 148 finishers. The club had three competitors in the Senior Men’s race over the day’s longest distance of 12km.. Matthew Crehan’s time was 42 min.25 secs. for 229 th placing. Andy O’Connor(M55) 62 min.49 secs.and 1460th place and Ray Vose(M50) 68 min.34 secs, 1629 th place. This race had the enormous field of 1,762 finishers.

Standish Hall Trail Race & Wrexham half

Only two of St Helens Sutton A.C. members were racing at the weekend. Matthew Crehan competing in the Standish Hall trail race and Louise Hogg running in the Wrexham Village Bakery Half-marathon. Matthew followed up last week’s win with another victory. The race’s 10km. of “trails” consisted of fields, bridleways, and wood & farm tracks, and all were well and truly conquered by Matt as he came out the winner in a time of 35 min.29 secs.over a minute clear of the chasing field. The organisers of Louise’s half-marathon apologised for the course, which started and finished on the Wrexham Industrial estate, being a little over distance. Louise, an L40 veteran finished 20th in her classification with a time of 1hr.44min.48secs.with approximately 800 finishers behind her.

Nick Beer 10km, Llandudno

The club’s oldest regularly competing member, Dorothy Fairhurst (F70), ran in the Nick Beer 10km road race, Starts on the promenade in Llandudno and follows Marine Drive around the scenic Great Orme, before returning to the promenade and finishing opposite Venue Cymru. Dorothy was the first finisher in her age group with a time of 55 min.15 secs.

Parbold Hill Race

St Helens Sutton A.C.’s leading men’s distance runner, Matt Crehan confirmed his recent good form at the weekend with a win over large field. Matt running in the 47th Parbold Hill Race, following in the footsteps of his father (Jim Crehan), mother (Susan Crehan) and Uncle (Neil Smart) all previous winners, lead from the gun to the finish, even with having to go back and find his running shoe that was sucked off in the muddy conditions. He won the testing 6.75 miles of what is described as “mixed terrain”. Matt’s time was 42 min.17 secs. with his nearest competitor in the 448 strong field 23secs. behind.

Winning streak for Gemma!

Saturday 11th February 2017 saw the final Manchester Area Cross Country League match of the season. Twelve athletes from St Helens Sutton AC competed in the cross country at Woodbank Park, Stockport.

First off for the club were the under 13 boys and girls. This race saw Michael Dobson finish 28th overall in 12.57, followed by Max Young who completed the 3.1km race in 51st place in 16.51. Twin brother Charlie Young, brought the team home in 52nd place in 17.28 meaning the team finished 13th overall! Lucy Bridge went in this race too; she finished 22nd in 15.39.

Next were the under 15 boys and girls, they covered the distance of 4.2km and finished 7th overall. Michael Brussels led the boys home in 25th place in a time of 18.06, tracked by Charlie Roberts who finished 28th in 18.12. On the other hand, Scott Aldred finished 31st in 20.24 whilst Liam Houghton was 32nd in 20.30 and for the girls; Alyx Bridge finished 22nd in 20.30!

The club had 2 representatives in the senior ladies 8.4km. Gemma Connolly won the race, finishing in 33.25!! Meanwhile, Rachel McGoldrick finished 37th in 39.29.

Andy O’Connor was the only senior man competing for the club; he completed the 10.4km race in 52.33 in 263rd.

Southport Mad Dog 10k

Three of the club’s senior ladies took part in the Southport Mad Dog 10km. race held on a circular flat course on the front at the seaside town. The open nature of the course and the current wind weather made the going more difficult than might be expected. First of the trio to finish the race, in a time of 52 min.26 secs. for the 642nd. place, was Laura Bunting (F45). Collette Flaherty (F35)’s time was 63 min.32 secs. for 1,626th. place and Jane Makin (F45) ran 77 min.09 secs. for 2,334th..If the ladies finishing positions seem high it should be borne in mind that there were over 2,500 finishers in the race.

Merseyside Schools Cross Country

Four of St Helens Sutton A.C.’s schoolboy members represented the town in the Merseyside Schools Cross-country Championships held on the parkland course of Birkenhead’s Arrowe Park. Michael Dobson continued his good form in taking third place in the Year 7 Under 13yrs. Boys group with a time for the 2.5km. course of 8 min.09 secs.. Jamie Ford. Charlie Roberts and Michael Brussels made up the town’s team in the Under 15yrs. Boys event over 4km.. Jamie finished a fine second place in 13 min.59 secs., Charlie was 13 th. in 15 min.36 secs. and Michael 23 rd. in 16 min.51 secs.. The club’s congratulations to all four.
